welfare in modern American history. Bill Clinton worked with Republicans to \u201cend welfare as we know it\u201d and eliminate welfare\u2019s supposed corrupting influence on the poor. Except the\u00a0\u201ccorrupting influence\u201d of government assistance never existed.\n\nA recent\u00a0<a class=\"external\" title=\"Opens new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/10\/21\/business\/the-myth-of-welfares-corrupting-influence-on-the-poor.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a>\u00a0by the New York Times pointed out that recent research contradicts the theory that a social safety net undermines positive behavior among the poor.\n\nThe Massachusetts Institute of Technology\u00a0<a class=\"external\" title=\"Opens new window\" href=\"http:\/\/economics.mit.edu\/files\/10849\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a>\u00a0that cash-assistance programs in six low-income\u00a0countries did not discourage work. Furthermore, a World Bank\u00a0<a class=\"external\" title=\"Opens new window\" href=\"http:\/\/econ.worldbank.org\/external\/default\/main?pagePK=64210502&amp;theSitePK=469382&amp;piPK=64210520&amp;menuPK=64166093&amp;entityID=000158349_20140521143938\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">review\u00a0<\/a>of 19 quantitative studies\u00a0found that cash-assistance in Latin America, Asia and Africa was not wasted on \u201ctemptation items,\u201d\u00a0such as tobacco and alcohol.\n\n\u201cAlmost without exception, studies find either no significant impact or a significant negative impact of transfers on temptation goods,\u201d the World Bank report said.\n\nOther supposed negative impacts from welfare, such as\u00a0<a class=\"external\" title=\"Opens new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nber.org\/papers\/w5149\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">birth<\/a>\u00a0out of wedlock and encouraging\u00a0<a class=\"external\" title=\"Opens new window\" href=\"http:\/\/scholarship.law.nd.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1400&amp;context=ndjlepp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">generational<\/a>\u00a0poverty, have been demonstrated to be\u00a0unfounded\u00a0by other research.\n\nThis trove of research demonstrates that the commonly accepted myth about welfare\u2019s \u201ccorrupting influence\u201d is not as well-founded as many may believe. However, research has shown clear benefits from the UBI system, including alleviating\u00a0<a class=\"external\" title=\"Opens new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/2014\/7\/23\/5925041\/guaranteed-income-basic-poverty-gobry-labor-supply\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poverty<\/a>, increasing\u00a0<a class=\"external\" title=\"Opens new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opendemocracy.net\/openindia\/stuart-weir\/basic-income-transforming-lives-in-rural-india\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">entrepreneurship<\/a>\u00a0and improving impoverished\u00a0children\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"external\" title=\"Opens new window\" href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2015\/03\/01\/opinion\/sutter-basic-income\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">educational<\/a>\u00a0outcomes.\n\nIn theory, unconditional assistance may encourage some individuals to frivolously spend their money. In practice, however, the research shows most individuals utilize cash-assistance to better themselves and their families.\n\n<a
